In this paper the problem of safety in tunnels is considered, with particular concern to the vulnerability to the fire. A robotic system, purposely designed for fire fighting and prevention in tunnels, is presented. The system can be installed in most of the existing road and railways tunnels without requiring significant modifications of the infrastructures. The main features of the system are illustrated and some details about the mechanical structure are provided. In particular, the results of the dimensioning procedure of the robot actuators and of the energy supply are given.

Abstract

In this paper the problem of safety in tunnels is considered, with particular concern to the vulnerability to the fire. A robotic system, purposely designed for fire fighting and prevention in tunnels, is presented. The system can be installed in most of the existing road and railways tunnels without requiring significant modifications of the infrastructures. The main features of the system are illustrated and some details about the mechanical structure are provided. In particular, the results of the dimensioning procedure of the robot actuators and of the energy supply are given.
