The investigation of tribological conditions in mechanical systems is a key problem. Thus, operational and working circumstances are related to lubrication status. Failure and damage events can be caused by poor lubrication regime. Here, we describe a method for examining the lubrication status of gearwheels using a vision system that combines statistical analysis and image processing. The methodology could be used to identify variations between lubrication regimes. Such approach could be also employed for the diagnosis of other mechanical systems in which it is possible to perform image acquisition.
