The paper focuses on the Loggia of Candia (current Heraklion) on Crete, which underwent several reconstructions from the Middle Age onwards. The 17th-century Loggia building was literally reconstructed during the 20th century in a supposed Venetian Renaissance form. In the early 20th century, a Padiglione Veneto was also built up in Rome in the presumed shape of the “original” Loggia. If we can’t talk about a resilient building, its reshaped image across time and space may be considered as such.

Abstract

The paper focuses on the Loggia of Candia (current Heraklion) on Crete, which underwent several reconstructions from the Middle Age onwards. The 17th-century Loggia building was literally reconstructed during the 20th century in a supposed Venetian Renaissance form. In the early 20th century, a Padiglione Veneto was also built up in Rome in the presumed shape of the “original” Loggia. If we can’t talk about a resilient building, its reshaped image across time and space may be considered as such.
