What has happened to conflict? It’s a topic on which there is a lively debate. There are those who argue that conflict has died out, for others conflict is more alive than ever. We have looked at conflict from a different perspective. There is no power that does not encounter some friction, that does not arouse some resistance, that does not pay some cost. How does society react to the effects of the now planetary spread of neoliberalism? What techniques of self-defence does it resort to? Society and politics are plural and, in a world that has become monstrously unstable, they react and interact in many ways. The contributions of this special issue present some significant cases.
