Abstract

This contribution is devoted to the reception of ancient Greek literature at the court of Alfonso the Magnanimous in Naples and, in particular, to the conspicuous group of Latin translations of Greek works made for the king by leading Italian and Greek humanists. Far from being the expression of a mere court divertissement, this was a real ‘campaign’ of translations, which flourished around the fall of Byzantium (1453) and helped to spread the image of Alfonso as the leader of a possible anti-Ottoman crusade, which never came to fruition
