The essay explores the reception of Vergil in the elegiac poetry of Renaissance southern Italy, particularly in the poems of four humanists active in the Kingdom of Naples in the late 15th and early 16th centuries: Francesco Patrizi, Elisio Calenzio, Aurelio Serena, and Francesco Peto. The poems the essay deals with are united by being steeped in both vegilianism and antiquarian taste turned to the antiquities and ancient history of the cities of the Kingdom of Naples. Given the numerous references to southern Italy included in Virgil's poetry, Virgilian poems end up being equally important models for these humanists as the elegiac poets dear to Italian humanism, especially Ovid and Martial
