Buenos Aires between sky and earth

The identity of the architecture of Buenos Aires and the image of the city are inextricably linked to verticality, so much so that the evolution of the rascacielo over time concretely manifests the changes that have occurred in the architectural culture and in the way of understanding urbanity in Argentina during the last century. It is possible to recognize three fundamental periods: the first that from the end of the nineteenth century can be said to have ended with the arrival of Le Corbusier in the city; in the second we witness an expansion of the city and the creation of quality architecture marked by a general search for pragmatism that look at the panorama of architectural culture marked first by the Modern Movement and then by brutalism; the last, from the nineties to today, is marked by the advent of post-modernism and the use of lesser quality and generally self-referential architecture. Today, this last period is opposed by a practice which is again inserted in the wake of modernity, and which seeks solutions to contingent problems through partly unprecedented spatial and typological solutions, evidence of a lively architectural cultural landscape operating in the city.
