The study of internal combustion engines becomes crucially important starting from the design stages. Indeed, proper design can greatly extend the life of such systems and decrease their failure probability. Despite this, various problems can arise with different system components during the engine regular operation. For this reason, it is necessary to develop and implement diagnostic methods that can detect possible system damage. This paper deals with the internal combustion marine engine vibrational study of in which a link in the sixth cylinder camshaft chain is damaged. It was feasible to recognize the unusual vibrational behavior of the system by using Discriminant Analysis, which was applied to statistical indices that were directly derived on the raw data obtained by mounting an accelerometer on the sixth cylinder of the cylinder.

Abstract
