The author explains the many similarities between sporting and religious experiences in order to focus on the mechanisms of the Church of Maradona, established in 1998. Between parody and authenticity, the church imitates several principles from Christianity to ultimately posit an idea of a "Maradonian sacred" relating to meaning, morality, and memory. For its committed followers, the Argentinian footballer is "God" in so far as h stands as a symbol of collective identification, inspiration, and regional/national pride.
