The Villa di Diomedes, the first visible plant of a suburban house beyond Porta Ercolano, characterizes the western sector of Pompeii. This essay focuses on the moments of its gradual discovery, its fortune among travellers and writers, and thus, on the historical perception of the country house. The field study and a comparison with historical iconography made it possible to highlight several stages of the transformations and the value of relations with the landscape of the location.
