The article investigates how the German press presented the pandemic to its readers. The study follows the approach by Bednarek and Caple 2014 which is based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of a news corpus in order to highlight the characteristics of media language and relate them to news values. To this end, two corpora were created consisting of the articles published in the online editions of Bild and Süddeutsche Zeitung from 10 March to 10 April 2020. The first findings show that journalists have foregrounded the negative impact of the event correlating it with economic issues, and have focused on the values of negativity and superlativity, contributing to creating a climate of concern among the readers and on those of éliteness and personalization to give reliability to the news.
