This paper focuses on Napoleonic volunteers who, between 1815 and 1820, left Italian coasts and took part in the struggle for the emancipation of Spanish America. After the battle of Waterloo, thousands of former Grande Armée’s soldiers were on leave and searched for new opportunities. Informal agents, on behalf of the criollos patriots, warmly encouraged their recruitment overseas, offering salaries, granting rewards, and promising glorious careers in the revolutionary armies. Driven by a culture of adventure and universalistic solidarity, Bonapartist veterans enlisted in the ranks of the ejércitos libertadors under the commands of Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín
