The rheology of suspensions of rigid particles in Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid is reviewed here. In view of the broadness of the subject, only the very basics of suspension rheology are discussed. Experimental evidences and well-established results from theory are only given for rheometric flows. Regarding the particle shape, only the two simplest (but prototypical) cases of spheres and uniaxial ellipsoids are considered. The effect of particle load is examined from the infinite dilution limit to the highly concentrated, up to jamming. Some very recent results on structure formation in non-Newtonian suspending liquids are also discussed.

Abstract
The rheology of suspensions of rigid particles in Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid is reviewed here. In view of the broadness of the subject, only the very basics of suspension rheology are discussed. Experimental evidences and well-established results from theory are only given for rheometric flows. Regarding the particle shape, only the two simplest (but prototypical) cases of spheres and uniaxial ellipsoids are considered. The effect of particle load is examined from the infinite dilution limit to the highly concentrated, up to jamming. Some very recent results on structure formation in non-Newtonian suspending liquids are also discussed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
