In this paper I present a global appraisal of Matthew Lipman's work by interpreting it against the backdrop of the debates on progressive education and its overcoming. The strengths and permanent topicality of Lipman's endeavour are highlighted but its possible weaknesses in contemporary scenarios are not passed over in silence.
