The major theorists active at the Institut für Sozialforschung in Frankfurt from the 1920s onwards are known primarily as the thinkers who developed the concept of “critical theory”, which deals with the discovery of the mechanisms at work in the reproduction of capitalist social domination. But they were also fine interpreters of the history of modern philosophy and modernity. Through a study of writings by Frankfurt theorists (from the 1927 Horkheimer lectures on modern philosophy at the Frankfurt University to Adorno’s 1960s essays), and also by their contemporaries, the research programme proposes to reflect on a number of axes and core issues of that process which one tradition of study of great importance has defined as “the constitution of modernity”. In the light of these observations, this project aims: 1. To identify the various interpretive lines of modern philosophy that emerge between the 19th and 20th centuries in the cultural context in which Horkheimer came of age at the Institut für Sozialforschung; 2. To bring to light Horkheimer’s contribution to understanding the developments of modern philosophical, political, scientific thinking; 3. To reconstruct the debates on modern philosophy between Horkheimer, Marcuse and Adorno at the Institut für Sozialforschung; 4. To reconsider the connections between modern philosophy and contemporary philosophy, the categories and the interpretive grids, as well as additional readings of modern philosophers of the Frankfurt School. In the light of these objectives, the project is to be divided into three phases: 1. collection and examination of the texts; 2. reconstruction of the context; 3. hermeneutic perspectives. It envisages: the translation of Horkheimer’s texts on modern philosophy into English and Italian; the creation of an online archive on the topic; the organization of international events; the writing of a series of articles and books on the Frankfurt School and modern philosophy.
