Abstract

In certain social housing districts, it has been often observed that entire communities have to face critical conditions of social isolation and exclusion from the driving processes of urban development. The research explores these conditions and evaluates related informal publicness according to three domains involving spatial indicators of resilience, segregation, and informality. Through GIS (Geographic Information Systems) implementation, a cross-scaling spatial analysis framework was developed, assessing the neighbourhoods’ state in terms of socio-spatial exclusion, through7specific indices of Dissimilarity, Isolation, and Exposure. The methodology has been tested on the case study of “Lotto O”, in Ponticelli district, in Naples (Italy). The contribution underlines the potentials of GIS application, providing some results developed by the authors within the European project HERA Joint Research Programme, “Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe – PuSH: Public Space in European Social Housing”.
