Abstract

The slopes of Mount Stivo, from Oltresarca area towards Cavedine (wes() and Gresta valleys (south) lo Cei lake on the eastern side, are dotted with engr, avings representing religious symbols, geometrie figures, inscriptions, dates and tools. These engravings are similar in style, type and technique, but every site has its own peculiarity. Their locations are on slopes crossed by medieval and modem ways, which link the valley-bottoms with higher settlements or more valleys in longer routes. One of the most interesting routes is the cobbled path linking the villages of Massone and San Martino (Arco) with Drena cast/e and Cavedine valley, where three rock-shelters with articulated engraving complexes are located (Nogaiole, Sant'Antonio and Pianaura). Other paths pass next to the rocks of Nago (near the important engraved area of Garda lake), Manzano, Cei, Calavino, Lasino and Cavedine. This research aims to investigate the specificfeatur.es of the rock engravings (stratigraphy, typology, techniques). Contact drawing, 2D and 3D photogrammetry and frottage have been used to record the signs, and this approach has been linked with swface sun1eys and reading of bibliographic, cartographic and toponymic sourcesfor better understanding of geologica!, geomorphological and environmental context, land and mountain use, exploitation of resources, religious signs and structures, history of settlements and ancient communication routes. In this way the study tries to connect rupestrian with landscape archaeology, through the creation of a method that focuses on different spatial levels, deepening different rocks and areas at various scales. The final purpose of the research is the chronological and functional interpretation of the engravings as part of the historical-archaeological reading of the landscape in its evolution and stratification over time by the interaction ofnatural and man-madefactors.
