More and more women are targeted by hate speech and the increasing use of social media has contributed to growing occurrences of gender-based hate speech. The Council of Europe (COE) has started to pay attention to this issue by adopting legal actions and promoting awareness-raising initiatives to combat it. In addition to different campaign materials (brochures, leaflets, websites, etc.), in 2016 the COE issued a revised edition of the manual “Bookmarks. A manual for combating hate speech online through human rights education”. Following in the tradition of Translation Studies (Venuti 2000; Bassnett 2002; Cronin 2006) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (Kress/van Leeuwen 1996; Jewitt 2014, 2016), this study analyses the English and Italian versions of said manual focusing on the activites devoted to gender-based hate speech. In particular, the investigation looks at how specialized discourses – institutional, political and legal – are “translated” into a different text-type and how words, images, colours and layout are produced and re-produced for educational purposes.
