Working on a borderland area of the Roman suburbs, the project deals with the theme of limen, aiming to achieve a continuity between the space of living and of nature. The project concerns some current themes in the contemporary architectural debate, interpreting urban regeneration as physical, functional, social and symbolic aspects of living. The project has a multi-scale strategy, establishing a relationship between the physical and functional redevelopment of the neighbourhood and the resulting social impacts, to trigger self-generative processes and assign new values and innovative forms of living. On a large scale, the focus is on the redevelopment of public space, guided by cultural heritage with the provision of an archaeological park and the creation of common areas. This is related to the redevelopment of the buildings, where the ground floor provides common functions and public and economic activities. The horizontal permeability is a vertical continuity of the built spaces, through volumetric removals that give a new face to the landscape, generating a system of green terraces and pop-up gardens. The project provides for a high presence of single-floor apartments, which require a redesign of the distribution and access systems, to ensure a better internal organization of the housing and increase the degree of privacy of the inhabitants. The aspects of energy sustainability are guaranteed by the use of green and NBS solutions and by a techno-typical retrofit/upgrade able to produce environmental and economic benefits in the medium-long term.
