Abstract
In her edition of the book XXXIV On nature Giuliana Leone argues that most of the criticism the Epicureans from Colotes to Diogenes of Enoanda direct against Socrates is rooted in Epicurus’ polemics against those who reject φυσιολογία as a tool to study the φαντάσματα. Our aim is to examine this hypothesis against the background of the recent views about Socrates’ character in the lively debate of the fourth and the early third centuries. Then we will advance a proposal for a possible target of Epicurus’ polemics in Plato’s corpus, namely where Socrates touches upon the themes of book XXXIV On nature: his last λόγοι with the ἐταῖροι in prison narrated in the PhaedoFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
