The territory of the Phlegraean Fields is characterized by a high concentration of environmental, cultural, landscape, economic and social resources that make it exceptionally interesting and, simultaneously, a place of problematic governance of transformations, due to the evident conflict between aspirations and interests of economic drivers and protection of natural and cultural resources. The restoration and enhancement strategies of the Phlegraean Fields’ landscape represent the applied filed of the projects developed by students during the workshop in Pozzuoli. The strategies, at the basis of the design proposals, take into account the territorial role of the municipalities of Pozzuoli, Bacoli and Monte di Procida inside the western area of the Neapolitan metropolitan area. The Phlegraean Fields are located on the western urbanized metropolitan boundary beyond which the vast flat area of the domitio coast begins towards the north. This border condition shows the role of the Phlegraean landscape between the dense Neapolitan urbanized area, characterized by volcanic morphologies, and the long domitio sandy coast. The challenges posed by the environmental and socio-economic drivers as well as the needs to recover degraded and abandoned areas, represent further incentives for the formulation of strategic transformation projects by the students during the workshop. In detail, four strategic projects were identified for the Phlegraean Fields area. The strategic project of the green infrastructure for the Phlegraean Fields constitutes the main sustainable development goal which is supported by the three previous proposed strategic projects: historical-archaeological heritage, mobility and territorial regeneration. The enhancement of heritage, slow mobility integrated with electric transport as well as an efficient widespread parking network and, finally, the priority areas of urban regeneration constitute the structure of interventions complementary to the broader strategic project of the green infrastructure of the Phlegraean Fields.
