The environmental crisis today manifests multiple directions ranging from pollution to the energy crisis and climate change, in which cities record an increase in consumption (of soil, energy, materials) but become less suitable for climatic impacts, growing in their incidence. In historic centers, urban comfort, usability and safety of the empty space system are increasingly conditioned by climatic phenomena such as heavy rainfall, heat waves and urban heat islands, with significant repercussions on the building-open space system, on health and on social inclusion. The theme of climate adaptation of empty spaces therefore acquires a strong relevance on the livability of the spaces of the historic city. The contribution illustrates the results of some research developed at the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II on the environmental design of the open space system of the historic center UNESCO site of the city of Naples for a regenerative and “climate-proof” city.
