In Metaphysics 1, 4, 985b, Aristotle cites verbatim the terms employed by Leucippus and Democritus to define the different status of the atoms (ῥυσμός, διαθιγή, and τροπή), also adding a (not unproblematic) “translation” for each of them, by recurring, respectively, to σχῆμα, τάξις, and θέσις. The paper discusses the main issues raised by Aristotle’s approach to the atomistic vocabulary, and also focuses on some textual problems which are relevant to fully understand this dense passage.

Abstract
In Metaphysics 1, 4, 985b, Aristotle cites verbatim the terms employed by Leucippus and Democritus to define the different status of the atoms (ῥυσμός, διαθιγή, and τροπή), also adding a (not unproblematic) “translation” for each of them, by recurring, respectively, to σχῆμα, τάξις, and θέσις. The paper discusses the main issues raised by Aristotle’s approach to the atomistic vocabulary, and also focuses on some textual problems which are relevant to fully understand this dense passage.File in questo prodotto:
