Can a place full of history and undeniably dense with unique physical and architectural elements dating from the past be deemed classifiable as completely anonymous and banal? The answer to this question is important for thinking about the future of Pozzuoli’s urban condition and the necessary actions that can react firmly to a banalizing vision (cynical accomplice of contemporary decay) and guarantee the happy survival of the contemporary city. Minimal intervention was the strategy that we adopted to bring light and dignity to the city’s urban form. To counter the cries of Bigness [Koolhaas] and Non-places, we believed that the only choice was to recover an idea that had been lost when the city began to evolve and relinquish the real needs of human life in favour of maximum profit.
