Abstract

The global changes (urbanization, migration, climate change, etc.) tak-ing place produce a significant effect on the city, magnifying physical degradation and social problems. Conflicts are so great as to destabilize the existing urban organization and trigger profound changes which need answers and to be shared. In scientific literature, the approach of urban resilience is particularly developed and addressed to the adjust-ments of the climate changes, and the management and prevention of natural disasters. The potential of the term, linked to a conception of the city as a complex adaptive system, however, is much broader and inter-est the various challenges of the urban sustainability. The paper deals with the issue of immigration in Southern Italy, proposing, through a case-study, a process of analysis, diagnosis and strategic decisions, based on the tools developed by the Resilience Alliance in the field of socio-ecological systems. The aim of the study is to investigate the pro-spective of the theory of resilience applied to the field of the technolog-ical design of the architecture. The outcome of the study is a methodol-ogy for assessing the resilience, which is based on the distance of the urban system compared to the critical thresholds, and the supporting tools for the put into practice of the Resilience Workbook for Practi-tioners to socio-urban systems. This can open up new opportunities for the recovery and enhancement of our urbanized contexts and potential-ly more effective governance processes.
