Abstract

The 1693 devastating earthquake radically changed the appearance of Catania, which was completely reconstructed during the 18th century. The natural disasters imposed a complete reconsideration of the Medieval past of the city and of the symbols of the local identity, which were selected, reconsidered and newly displayed in the modern urban reconfiguration. The cult of St. Agatha – organized around two main poles (the churches build on the places of the martyrdom and the Norman Cathedral) – played a central role in an overall process of reflection on the cultural roots of the city.
