In this paper the author deals with the role of urban iconography and cartography to study the image and the identity of the historical urban landscape. Within the long tradition of studies in Europe on this subject, the Interdepartmental Research Center on the Iconography of the European City (CIRICE) of the University of Naples Federico II is active on this topic in the Italian and international sphere.
