Abstract

With the Costa v ENEL decision of 1964, the European Court of Justice began building European Union Law through its legal interpretations. Since the decision issued by the Luxembourg Court more than 55 years ago, many things have changed. The European Union has grown from its six core member states into its current 28, while along the way, Germany has been reunified and now, one of its most prominent members, the United Kingdom, may leave in 2020. This talk reviews the historical evolution of the fundamental principles of European Union Law as well as the main challenges that have existed and continue to exist for the functioning of the Union, its form of government and its citizens.
