Gearwheels are widely used mechanisms for transmitting torque between mechanical devices. Gear tribological state compromises their performance and lifetime. This work introduces a signal-processing methodology to assess the vibrational dynamics of a single pair of gears, under different tribological conditions. Such approach aims not only to identify the tribological state of the system but opens the route to different possible applications in the health monitoring of several mechanical systems.

Abstract

Gearwheels are widely used mechanisms for transmitting torque between mechanical devices. Gear tribological state compromises their performance and lifetime. This work introduces a signal-processing methodology to assess the vibrational dynamics of a single pair of gears, under different tribological conditions. Such approach aims not only to identify the tribological state of the system but opens the route to different possible applications in the health monitoring of several mechanical systems.
