This essay is a critical reassessment of Carlo Ginzurg's approach to ecstatic and visionary experiences of the kind he deals with in his Storia notturna (1989), according to the methodological perspective of Cognitive Science of Religion (CSR). Starting from recent researches on the so-called "ecstatic experiences", this essay aims at discussing the comparative methodological approach carried out in Ginzburg's book. In light of concepts like that of "cognitive experience", "memory" and "framing processes," this essay wants to re-evaluate and update the structural approach fielded by Ginzburg, especially as regards the comparison of cultures and the historical consequences which Ginzburg draws from this.
