The aim of the project was the development of a mathematical/ compuational framework for the systematic numerical analysis of complex problems in materials science. In particular we have analysed two significant problems in materials science and fluid mechanics: (1) deformation and failure of solid crystals and thin films and (2) phase transitions in liguid crystals under electro-mechanical forces. The aim was the development of a numerical analysis framework bridging microscopic-stochastic matheamtical models with state-of-the-art numerical analysis methods for large scale systems .
