My contribution to the discussion compares social inquiries during the Seventies (i.e. the research on the structure of the footwear industry in Naples) with the current reportages or ethnographic researches like Roberto Saviano’s Gomorra and Jason Pine’s The Art of Making do in Naples. One of the main characteristics of the first approach to social research was a strong commitment in promoting changes in society and the working conditions of the Neapolitan proletariat. The second one has the merit to focus on social actors who are mostly invisible to both academic researches and trade unions but at the same time it reproduces stereotypes
