Community, Violence and Memory: the Case of Ottaviano

In the chapter, the local context of Ottaviano ( Campania region, ITALY) is the protagonist of a socio- geographical analysis of criminal phenomena linked to a famous boss of Camorra: Raffaele Cutolo, born in Ottaviano. Cutolo reached the peak of his criminal career in the 90s. The essay scrutinised for the symbolic meanings that violence assumes in local context, focusing on public, individual and communitary perceptions of violence. We reflect not only on how the myth of Raffaele Cutolo controls the local perception of violence but also on its effects on social and relational dynamics at local level, still today.
