The common function of silence-makers, attributed by Greek proverbs to Hermes and wolf, suggests the existence of some relationship between the god and the animal. In the first part of the article, we examine the spheres of activity where Hermes and wolf interact, sharing similar ways of action. Finally, we try to reconstruct the cultural configuration which justifies the silencing power proverbially attributed to wolf ’s eye.

Abstract

The common function of silence-makers, attributed by Greek proverbs to Hermes and wolf, suggests the existence of some relationship between the god and the animal. In the first part of the article, we examine the spheres of activity where Hermes and wolf interact, sharing similar ways of action. Finally, we try to reconstruct the cultural configuration which justifies the silencing power proverbially attributed to wolf ’s eye.
