The theme of the student housing can be interpreted not only as a place of experimentation of housing models, but also a phenomenon at the base of the several types of settlement both within and outside the inner city. The accomodation for students can be compared to a monastery cell, a place dedicated to study and intellectual work. Not surprisingly, the early cores of the università complexes developed around the cloister courtyards, property of religious rodersi. The laicization of universities doesn’t alter the sense of a collective living, based on sarin but also on the possible isolation and concentration in the act of studying. The coexistence of both domestic and working areas in such a minimum space requie a certain dose of flexibility and a strong bond between the design of the space and that of the furniture, making these spaces a way of testing new forms to be extended to other residential typologies. The necessity to feel at home and to own an only temporarily placet o live connects the forms of this way of dwelling to topical themes such as nomadism, that, although being based on a choice, is the distintive feature of the contemporary occidental way of living and the contextual need of belonging and identification. Since the foundation of the most ancient universities in the European cities, student housing has shake whole districts, defined their evolutions, connected them to other forms of urban dwelling. The università cities disgression runs along the experimentations on the Cité Verte and, as of today, hasn’t interrupted this bond. The necessity of a mixing between different functions and the integration of the design of new elements and the restoration of the existing environment keeps this bond alive, making this typology of housing a fertile ground of experimantation.
