Abstract

An elegy by Francesco Peto da Fondi, a Pontano’s friend, is an encomium of the Capuan nobleman Ettore Fieramosca who defeated the French at Barletta in 1503 but it also comprehends an erudite antiquarian inquiry on Amyclae, the Spartan colony in southern Latium mentioned by Virgil in Aen. X 564. Following Servius’ commentary Peto revisits this mythical account to assert that the inhabitants of destroyed Amyclae had founded his hometown Fondi.
