Alcuni carmi di Catullo (26; 31; 44) hanno per oggetto proprietà immobiliari, case, ville e fondi propri o di amici, a volte rappresentati ironicamente modesti o soggetti a debiti rovinosi, come la villula di c. 26, di incerta proprietà per un dubbio della tradizione manoscritta che la qualifica come nostra (del poeta) o vestra, cioè del destinatario Furio. Questo Furio, se si potesse identificare con Furio Bibaculo, aveva a sua volta scritto di Valerio Catone, poeta e filologo, ridotto in miseria dopo aver perso per debiti una villa a Tuscolo (frr. 2 e 3 Tr.). Questi temi poetici rappresentano una società in crisi, che vedeva arricchirsi improvvisamente ambigui personaggi come Mamurra (cc. 29; 114; 115). Non molti anni dopo, la villula e l’agellus del catalepton 8 dell’appendix Vergiliana rappresenteranno il diverso ideale di vita e i nuovi orizzonti culturali della poesia augustea. Some poems of Catullus (26; 31; 44) deal with real estate properties, houses and villas, his own or owned by some of his friends, sometimes pictured ironically as modest or subject to ruinous debts, such as the villula of C. 26, of uncertain property because the manuscript tradition oscillates between nostra (of the poet) and vestra (of the recipient Furius). This Furius, if one identifies him with Furius Bibaculus, composed himself a piece on Valerius Cato, a poet and philologist who had fallen into misery after losing his Tusculanum over debts (FRR. 2 and 3 Tr.). These poetic themes represent a society in crisis, where ambiguous characters, such as Mamurra, suddenly have acquired their fortunes (CC. 29; 114; 115). Within a few years, the villula and the agellus of the Catalepton 8 of the Appendix Vergiliana will represent different ideals of life and the new cultural horizons of the Augustan poetry.
