The paper focuses on Libanius’ epistle 1534 Foerster, in which the rhetorician thanks his friend Theodorus, a high-ranking official, for sending him a portrait of Aelius Aristides, the famous rhetorician who lived in the second century AD. This study provides an analysis of this epistle at the light of Libanius’ admiration for Aristides, clearly attested in the whole of his literary production; it also furnishes the first Italian translation, together with a commentary, in which historical, rhetorical and textual issues are discussed.
