The essay investigates some of the most significant aspects of the use of Greek fontes in Virgil’s epic production. It identifies the elements that contribute to a new expressive technique, particularly in relation to Dido ‘s story in the IV book of Aeneid. Its epic and tragic precedents are identified in the text, enhancing, through a comparative analysis of the texts, the contribution of Greek tragedy, in particular, with the creation of the tragic character of Dido and the construction of scenes and situations.
