Abstract

Among the Naples’ Bay islands, Ischia is the one that expresses more than the others its geological and natural origins. The cultural landscape of Ischia island cannot leave out of this particular identity and also of the myths which it is linked to. This paper move its arguments from the tentative to identify what we could consider the cultural landscape of Ischia. In fact, this Island is characterized by a strongest tradition which gave us the image of a site of extraordinary beauty. Painters, writers and scientists have handed a reality of Ischia made by environmental amenities in which the nature and human works were harmoniously combined. Despite this past conditions of equilibrium between architecture and the spectacular nature, Ischia shows us today signs of negative changes occurred over the last decades. The sublime foreshortenings are sometimes alternated with the visible lack of virtuous government of the territory, even if enchanting atmospheres and charming glimpses represent today the main characteristic of the island. After a short analisys on the current cultural landscape meaning, the intangible dimension of the cultural landscape of Ischia is underlined, provided that myth and criticalities coexist. The necessity of an interpretative methodology based on a interdisciplinary approach is compulsory since the cultural landscape is positioned to the borders of each discipline. For the Ischia, belonging to the extraordinary site as Naples Bay, we need to achieve new interpretative tools to address the on-going changes.
