The topic of the doctor-patient relationship is a classic theme in medical sociology, currently at the center of attention following the resort to more sophisticated medical techniques, limited not only to diagnosis and treatment, but towards early detection and prevention of some illnesses. In 21st century society the doctor-patient relationship is very different and more complex. We find, in fact, a profound social transformation in which we see a true difference in the context involving three decisive and simultaneous intersecting phenomenon: the growing vulnerability of the individual, the process of medicalization of society and the dynamics regarding the perception of risk.

Abstract

The topic of the doctor-patient relationship is a classic theme in medical sociology, currently at the center of attention following the resort to more sophisticated medical techniques, limited not only to diagnosis and treatment, but towards early detection and prevention of some illnesses. In 21st century society the doctor-patient relationship is very different and more complex. We find, in fact, a profound social transformation in which we see a true difference in the context involving three decisive and simultaneous intersecting phenomenon: the growing vulnerability of the individual, the process of medicalization of society and the dynamics regarding the perception of risk.
