Relevant treatises, kind of monagraphies and the corpus of Greek scholia help us to improve and enhance our knowledge of ancient literary criticism. Aesthetic ideas, linguistic notions, philological observations, organically arranged in proper works or scattered through the marginal and interlinear notes found in manuscripts, was actually used in the interpretation of texts. This paper sketches some ways to approach a text the ancient scholars did practice, since not only literary criticism caught their attention but semantics, linguistic questions, textual criticism and the explanation of all kind of facts did too.
