The essay, confirming the construction in distinct parts of Naples, aims to show the singular connection between the ideas of city, to which the parts are referred, and the correspondent typologies that structured them representing different cultures of dwelling. Forms and spaces of dwelling decline, every time, with a singular adequacy, the particular transition from public and collective spaces to domestic private spaces following the tradition (not only Mediterranean) of the great European capitals. Starting from the close coincidence between urban fabric, blocks and typologies of the Greek-Roman city (courtyard house), through the Angevin additions (block-house and fondaco), the ones of the Renaissance and late-Renaissance (courtyard houses, block houses with courtyard), up to the Enlightenment’s reformulation (big civic monuments), it is possible to confirm the continuity and the migration of some architectural typologies. This dialectic continuity is inside different but comparable morphological structures also in relationship with the singular orographic condition of the city foreshadowing the “world-buildings” (really urban parts): big and complex urban artifacts in a city opened to the nature and the territory in the Eighteenth century. Finally, the city of the Enlightenment is the last moment of a millenary urban history where the dialectic between geography, urban morphology, residential parts and monuments is clearly defined before of the obtuse nineteenth homologations and, with few exceptions, of the mindless building aggression of the twentieth century.
