The chapter is an exercise of reflective sociology on early school leaving (ESL) in Italy, a notable social issue since it is related to poverty, reduced social mobilities, increasing difficulties in labour market, scarce innovativeness of economy, health issue and reduced social, cultural and civic participation. It firstly introduces early school leaving as a social issue in Italy within the overall orientation and effort of European Union to tackle it. Then we analyse education policy and the public debate on early school leaving in Italy, by exploring how ESL has been problematised overtime, how it arose as a social problem, and the discursive strategies to understand it and that supported the policy knowledge to contrast it. Following the same line of argument, we present how the Italian sociology of education has studied early school leaving as issue, mapping the sociological research on early school leaving. Finally the chapter concludes the exercise of reflexivity discussing three research projects which have been inspired by the logic of action-research, and in which we have played a role as sociologists.
