Traditionally, Italian historiography has viewed the Napoleon era very favorably as an important stage in the modernisation of the peninsula. The Empire was seen as a logical extension of the revolutionary age and, at the same time, as an era that effectuated reform projects that sovereigns and governments of the Ancien Régime were not able to implement in the last decades of the eighteenth century. This chapter underscores this point of view but also offers alternative approaches to the epoque by considering new sources and regional varieties. It underlines the impact of Napoleonic modernization on the Italian states. It highlights the regional approaches of recent research literature, which avoid an overly linear interpretation that anticipate the Risorgimento. Finally, it discusses the challenges to the traditional interpretation of Napoleonic Italy and the revisions it has undergone in the past few years.
