The area of the marshes outside the city walls. Overlapping plots of land between rural dwellings, land reclamation and advancing urbanization

Compared to other disciplines such as hydraulic engineering, agronomy, urban planning and technology, architectural and urban composition works less through traditionally “scientific” means that are linked to a more logical interpretation and replaces “analysis” with “reading”: the desire to describe what is there without immediately worrying about making it correspond to pre-established categories. A reading always is, explicitly oriented to the search for “features” only sometimes objectifiable and in this case it’s strongly marked by indications which are offered by the point of view that this research intends to privilege. We wanted to see the role that “water routes” have had in the formation and transformation of the eastern area of Naples and by starting with the remains of these routes it is possible to create an image and meaning for the new landscapes.
