Abstract

The theme of the extended fruition of the cultural heritage vivifies and nurtures research, its objective being to study with an experimental approach how to improve the accessibility of Pompeii, in the broad sense of adequacy, not only to the requirement to overcome the architectural and perceptive obstacles in several areas, but also to the more general one of valorising the archaeological site. Valorisation meaning improving facilities for security and comfort, and providing an attentive and informed perception of the Pompeii archaeological area. The paper arose from an extensive examination of the state of the art on the accessibility theme in terms of debate and critical literature as well as Italian and international norms, or in reference to the leading experiments in planning the accessibility of archaeological areas abroad and in Italy, and from a reconnaissance in situ that rendered the condition of the places, in order to express methodological lines of intervention for improving accessibility and valorising the site, that can become reference Best practices for other archaeological sites as well.
