Recent results on the interaction of liquid crystals with the angular momentum carried by light beams are reviewed, with particular attention focused on the exchange of the orbital angular momentum of light. A novel liquid-crystal–based device, the q-plate, is also introduced and some of its applications in both classical and quantum optics are presented.

Abstract
