Biodiesel production by autotrophic microalgae cultures can contribute to the production of renewable energetic resource and to limit the increase of the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The design and the optimisation of photobioreactors for microalgal culture may affect the performance of biodiesel-production processes. The present contributions reports about photobioreactor simulations taking into account both photosynthetic kinetics and photobioreactor hydrodynamics. The modelling of the coupled kinetic and hydrodynamic of microalgae in photobioreactors is presented. The photosynthesis was simulated by means of a lumped kinetic parameter model of photosynthetic factor. Two hydrodynamic models were investigated: i) a Lagrangian model based on homogeneous turbulence; ii) a CFD multiphase model based on VOF. Photobioreactor performances were assessed in terms of photosynthesis rate.
