Rupture in natural clays is often brittle and leads to formation of shear surfaces or zones. This may be observed either in laboratory tests or in situ. After a discussion of laboratory evidences, the paper describes the features of shear structures induced in natural deposits during engineering works or by geological phenomena. Recent experiences of the Authors on occurrence and features of shear zones in clay are also presented
